TRUTH BE TOLD Table Talk

Oskar Blues in Lyons

Tuesday, October 20th

5-7pm

Here’s how it works: we meet at Oskar Blues in Lyons for happy hour and talk to each other.  We’ll informally tell stories as we prepare for the upcoming slam on November 1st. The theme is STORM. Come tell us about your experiences in the Great Flood of 2013, the firestorm of falling in love, your personal tempest in a teapot, or that time you got swept up in a funnel cloud and ended up in the Land of Oz.

There’s no fee, but please RSVP on this event page so we know how many people to expect. We’ll reserve a table for 10, and if more people show up we’ll pull up another table. The last one was big fun, so please join us in building our community of storytellers.

Thursday, June 11th, 5-7pm

Come join Nina and Johanna for a beverage, delicious happy hour food and some informal storytelling.  We'll reserve a table for 10, so come on by with your "Who's Your Daddy" stories and join us. The first 8 get a seat at the table. If a huge throng of story lovers show up, we'll start another table.

This is sure to be a blast! If you're sitting on the edge of a story and not sure it's ready for the main stage, this is the perfect place to try it out and see if the story has legs.

2nd annual All-Star Grand Slam

February 22nd, 2015

eTown Hall

Happy hour at 5:30pm, Doors open at 6pm, Show starts at 6:30pm

The winner of each Truth Be Told story slam is invited back to tell another story at the 2nd annual All-Star Grand Slam.

In addition to the pre-selected storytellers, co-hosts Nina Rolle and Johanna Walker open up the competition to the audience, inviting all those who have prepared a five-minute, true life story to put their names in a hat with the hopes of being selected to tell it on stage.

Between stories, Rolle and Walker perform song medleys and one-line stories based on the evening’s theme, creating a one-of-a-kind event that is equal parts story hour, competition, and cabaret. This month's house band (band name forth coming) is comprised of: Nina Rolle, Dave Willey, Tom Weiser, Jessica Cerullo, and Sharon Glassman.

Two Evening Concerts with Charming Hostess: The Ginzburg Geography: A Sonic Exploration of Italian Antifascism with Nina Rolle, Raoul Rossiter and Dave Willey

March 28th and 30th

Join us for two concerts with Jewlia Eisenberg and Charming Hostess, exploring Italian antifascism. The show will also include spoken word in Italian and English by students in the Department of Italian and Program in Jewish Studies, as well as feature a bilingual Italian-English zine about Ginzburg by Jewish Studies major and Italian minor Shikari Browne.

The Ginzburg Geography is drawn from the life and work of Natalia and Leone Ginzburg, Italian Jews famous for anti-fascist resistance and intellectual brilliance. It is a sonic map focusing on where they lived together: Turin, Pizzoli, and Rome. Charming Hostess’ map refers to specific physical locations, but also resonates with the actions and relationships associated with those places, allowing a sense-memory of places in time. Much of the information in our map comes from the Ginzburgs’ writing on place.

The map of The Ginzburg Geography is new and traditional music drawing from the Italian regions of Piemonte, Abruzzo and Rome; from Italian Jewish liturgy, the oldest and most remote in Europe; and from Italian anti-fascist songs–work chants and resistance anthems. This iteration of The Ginzburg Geography is in concert form. It will soon be presented as an immersive performance that maps not only the journeys of the Ginzburgs, but also those of visitor participants, creating a sonic forest of maps to walk among, listen to, and add to.

Free and Open to the Public.
